98SE to XP
so... wudda ya think

is an upgrade 98SE to an XP workable?

if you CAN'T format over and do a fresh install?

just curious

stick to answering Q of 'is it doable' rather than suggesting format and fresh install plz

doable, not adviseable, causes more problems than it fixes.

When I first got XP the day it came out thats what I did, just installed it over 98. I then decided to do a "clean install" Did that but forgot to make a seperate partition for the os..Still had a seperate partition from my 98 install that I never got rid of. So I got partition magic and tried to merege my old 98 partition with the os on it with with the rest of c drive. Hard lock up and crash ensued.

Couldn't get out of it so while trying to boot(would just freeze right after the ram count) I was pressing F8 11,del, whatever and got to a little widow where it asked if I wanted to boot from cd,XP is nice for being able to boot from the cd, did that and did a clean, fresh format to ntfs and installed.

But yes I had no problem installin over 98, just when I got playing around with Partition Magic.

well u know... i'd like to upgrade here at work
but IT time to get my data and keep it while formating drive and installing = $$'s... way cheaper to just install over

i could make a case for upgrade... dunno 'bout format & fresh install of it tho

Just back everything up and upgrade. As I understand it though the upgrade cd and clean install cd are the same ones for the same price. It's just if you select upgrade you have to have your 98 disk, put in the cd player when it asks, enter your serial number, take it out then put the XP disk back in to continue.

Cost is no different.

data back up adds to the cose

well, u know... data back up used to take a long time to do and that = $$'s
however, i've recently seen that it is now done incredibly fast so mebe wouldn't cost much more to have tech do the data back up lolll

Kali is on a distinguished road
I run 98se. I had it before and upgraded (well clean install) to XP professional.. and i HATED IT.. it treats you like a little kiddie who doesnt know your way around the keyboard.. and it ran slow on CPU (p3 450 Mhz 384 ram) so i tried a dual boot 98/xp but XP thought it was the boss and ruined 98se.. so i went back to 98 .. cuz i know it "inside and out" and i can tweak it well, so until i get a new comp.. im stickin with 98 and i advise you to do so also (unless you have a fast Comp)

If you do decide to do it.. data backup is EASY AS PIE. Get yourself a Disk Partitioner ( i suggest Partion Magic 7.0 ) and cut off a slice of your HD and store your backup on there...

Hope it all works out to your liking
-Kali
