What do you use?

I just uninstalled Norton Firewall & now my computer is smoking:cool:

I'm going to go back to ZoneAlarm for a bit & see how it goes... Norton FW was just conflicting with too many programs & not getting along at all.

But I don't have that bogged down feeling I have when Norton Firewall is running.. so I guess ZA wins for now :whome:

ZAPro with web filtering ...... love itYeah the Pro is pretty OK.. I've seen that on other computers.
I think the only thing I don't like about this ZoneAlarm is I can't R click & temp. disable to use ftp.. it shuts it right down instead. With Norton, I can R click & temp. disable.. then R click & enable again.

Oh well.... guess they all sux! lol

are you talking about a program like ws_ftp for uploading to webspace or downloading from ftp sites? If so, you can set in programs to allow .. not a biggie of a deal.

or this if you are shutting zone alarm internet access temporarily

Granting pass-lock permission to a program

When the Internet Lock is engaged, programs given pass-lock permission can continue to access the Internet. If you grant pass-lock permission to a program, and that program uses other applications to perform its functions (for example, services.exe), be sure to give those other programs pass-lock permission as well. A key symbol in the Lock column indicates that the program has pass-lock privilege.

To grant or revoke pass-lock privilege:

Select Program Control|Programs.
Select a program from the list, then click in the Lock column.
Select Pass Lock or Normal from the shortcut menu.

must be the way you have it set up or something.. I don't even realize Norton is running on my machine.. same on as it is off. In fact, since I got away from win98 and McAfee, I never experience computer slow downs, or are you talking about internet performance?

I think Netscape is what's slowing down your computer :p lol

I feel the same way...:whome: The main thing that slows me down is that darned 'proxy'...:shifty: I change that and all is well.

are you talking about a program like ws_ftp Yup. But DW have ftp built into it.

ZA has changed since I last had it.. this free one doesn't look like you can 'pass-lock' anything.
Besides.. it is granted in a way.. I gave permission for DW to access the internet.

must be the way you have it set up or something.. I would think that except a while back I had the DW ver. 4 on here at the same time as the MX.. as soon as the MX was installed.. it had trouble connecting.. but I could go to ver. 4 & use it no problem.
or are you talking about internet performance?

No, Norton bogs it down. I can feel the dif. since I removed it... and after formate, I could feel the difference before I install to after I installed it.

edit: macromedia said to go to Internet options & click this... tool bar, select Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, under the browsing setting, you will find use passive ftp etc.

I did that but it didn't help.

I'm using ZoneAlarm too but haven't updated for quite a while. The new version is 4.5.538.001. In the past sometimes there is problems with updates and I was wondering if anyone has installed this version yet and all is well?

Is that the free version debmarie?

I'm still using version 3.7.143. I wasn't aware that there was a new version out. Usually you get a pop-up asking you if you want to upgrade?

Upgrading to that version was no problem, but I remember upgrading to the previous version was a pain because you had to first completely uninstall the old version (which wasn't clearly indicated).

<EDIT>.....lmaoo....I spoke too soon. I just clicked to check my version and look what just popped up! :D

If you go to the traffic logs and right click any of the entries, you can do a backtrace and Whois. :)

It let some virus get through though... :( My computer was attacking my teachers' computer with that 'I love you' virus .... totally harmless and comical, since mine was the only one doing it... :shifty: Nope I didn't have a crush on him :CRP LMAO

Did you upgrade and all is well?

Does the firewall also stop viruses?

TB, I use Norton's Internet Security 2004, it has several things that slow your system down, not the firewall in my case,it's the popup blocker. I too was ready to dump Norton, and I did for a week but I missed the email spam blocker that built itself into Outlook so there wasn't a lot of configuring to do other than to train the spam engine. Tried the AVG freebie and McAffe once again but found Norton to be more of what I liked. Now after re installing Norton, to my surprise, it is a lot faster now that it is properly installed. Originally I simply installed it over top of the 2002 version without a total wipe of the old version. Now with a clean install and newly increased ram, this thing is as fast as I would have hoped!

Only if your router comes with a built in hardware firewall. Some routers don't. What's the make and model?
