Decided to un-install ZA after using it for a couple of years and can't believe the difference in speed on the comp. Browsing is much faster and received a great report from GRC regarding my security setup using just my Linksys router.
I also retested my up and down speed at DSL and was in the 700 range for down and 285 for up. While I don't think it was causing my connection problems, which is now fixed, I think I will leave it un-installed until someone attacks me.:)

Yeah I notice a big dif. when not using a firewall.. but what are ya gonna do lol.

Some people will say you just really don't need it... IF a hacker wants in your computer he will get in regardless. Others say it's dumb not to have it.

So, personal preference I guess.

If you have a Router then there really is no need for a software firewall.

with router, really no need for personal firewall for machines that's used moreso fun and personal things that are less important...for more important stuff like finances, income tax and business related data, then double layer firewall may be more effective

I use ZA and I haven't seen any decrease in speed on this machine since I first downloaded it.

Could someone explain to me (in non-technical terms please lol) how a router works exactly, and why you don't need firewall software when you have one?

A router is a hardware firewall. It takes the ip's of the 3 machines we have here and assigns its own ip's to form a network. It also has a software configuration which allows you to close or open ports as well as log all incoming and outgoing traffic.

On the The tech side, it clones the mac addresses of the ISP and changes them making it very difficult for someone to find you.

Hope this makes sense:)

Gotta get me a router :shifty:...
lolI got me one http://70.85.82.164/%7Egraphics/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

And I also had to uninstall ZoneAlarm. I was having pockets of problems lol

Since I got rid of the ZA, I've found a few others problems that have cleared up that I really had no idea what was going on there.

Good for you TG, what kind did you get? Make sure you download the latest firmware for it from the manufactures site. Have fun http://70.85.82.164/%7Egraphics/vb/images/smilies/smile.gif

Make sure you download the latest firmware What?

What is firmware as opposed to software?

I think whatever it came with, is updated.

It's a D-Link.
