View Full Version : Windows XP Home for $75 at Staples
We just picked up Windows XP Home for $75 at Staples tonight.
We brought in the Best Buy flyer where it was advertised for $99 (regular price $149)...and Staples gave us the sale price plus 50% of the difference. I thought the Staples Manager's eyes were going to pop out of his head when he saw the price on the cash register. :p :D

Does Staples usually give 50% of the dif. when matching the discounted price from other flyers?

Upgrade will work with 95 and up. Just do a clean install and stick in the disk for whatever version you are upgrading from and let it look at it, then continue on.
What do you mean? It's for upgrading 98 to XP?I don't want an upgrade of XP prefer the full install. :)

I don't want an upgrade of XP prefer the full install. :)I understand you want that. I was asking what you meant when you said you were excited to see that until you realized it was an Upgrade.
I can't see the ad that clearly.. is it an Upgrade they are selling? To upgrade 98 to XP?
upgrade will upgrade 98/ME to XP............. hmmmmm for that price I might consider it temporarily until I can afford to get the full Pro version....

upgrade will upgrade 98/ME to XP.............OK, I don't think you're understanding my Q.. but I think you've answered it.
.......... hmmmmm for that price I might consider it temporarily until I can afford to get the full Pro version.... LYes, it's probably worth it Deb. My work computer is a 98 Upgraded to XP. The 98 was crashing all the time & causing me a lot of trouble. I upgraded my 98 to XP & it's working WAY better. Not as good as a format & fresh install.. but still better.
Since any problems you have in your 98, carry over into the upgrade, if your 98 is running w/o any problems, you should be fine using that. It's so cheap.. go for it Deb. You will not regret going to XP!

The upgrade is a full version, you just need the cd from an earlier os to validate it. It's just a way to give a price break if you own an older version. You can still do a clean install on an empty or newly formatted drive.

You can still do a clean install on an empty or newly formatted drive.Hum.. I didn't know that. It wasn't how I understood it to work when I bought it or I would have done a fresh install at work.
So, if you do it after a format.. would you have to install the 98 FIRST, then the upgrade?

No, just start the fresh install. At one point early on it will say it's looking for compliant software, just pop in the cd, direct it to the cd drive, it will look at it and say ok. Put the xp cd back in and you're in business - it will just continue with the install. :)

:cry We tried today, but Staples had dropped their price to meet Best Buy's! Oh well, them's the breaks. I'll have to keep my eyes open for more of those little gems that slip through their price watching eyes! :D
