Ok I install XP Pro..
I choose fresh installation but never thought to click the advanced options so for some reason it defaulted the installtion to my D drive. I wanted to put it on C
Ok no problem I run setup again and click advanced options where it lets me pick the partition and drive I want.
Ideally I would like to create a separate partition to install on my C drive but here is where problem one arrives. In the screen that it shows my drives and the partitions and unpartitioned space my C drive is like this
C-Partition 1 55 gigs
---unpartitioned space
then the D drive is listed...
It says to create a partiton or delete on press c and whatever the other key is. I cant do that because the main part of my C drive with all the space is a partion, it wont let me delete it.
So i decide to install overtop on there anyway, it says it is deleting all the files from that drive yet after the install is complete everything is still there, all programs and everything from before I tried to install windows...
so Question 1
How do I completely nuke everything on my c drive as well as get rid of partition 1 and the unpartitioned space?
Question 2
now when I boot I get 2 boot options, for my 2 xp pro installtions one on C one on D. During the boot screen it says
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional
I have no idea if I am booting from c or d
So how do I get rid of the boot prompt and ideally remove the xp installation from the D drive completey without wiping out whats on it...
Brutal lol
If you select c: you should be given three options for formatting.
Quick(Ntfs)
Full (Ntfs)
or leave as is.
You want to do a full format on C

thanks Jim I actually figured it out but ran into another issue.
anyway what I did was boot from the cd and went into the recovery consol typed format c went fine. then procedded to install windows and guess what?
my computer died right in the middle of it, shut down and thats thats, no power nothing I think my power supply died....its fugging amazing everytime I go to install windows on this thing something goes wrong
that just may have been the nail in the coffin for that computer, i may buy another, amazing I am considering scrapping a xp 2100 with 2 60 gig hds and geforce card but i have had enough of it, last year i had to replace a motherboard, power supply and ram due to lightning....
if you are wondering I am on my old P 2 400 now

Bromy, GIMME THE COMPUTER :D I'll take care of it for ya hehe
Sucks you have such bad luck with Windows install tho :(
wow. thats bad luck for sure.
You are absolutley sure something is burnt out?
unplug it from the wall for a bit and see what happens and watch for any blue screens

unplugged it from the ups, plugged it back in nothing, when you hit the power button nothing happens, not even a sound, no power whatso ever getting to the computer, even tried plugging it directly into the wall
I am on the same ups with the same socket even on this and its working fine so I know the ups is working
it didnt blue screen or anything when it died, it just quit and that was it.

no.. :D
If it turns out to be your power supply and you get it replaced here's what I suggest you do.
I assume you have all your data backed up somewhere?
Is it on "D' ?
Physically remove the drive "D' from the machine.
Boot from the XP CD
Follow all steps required for installing Windows.
When asked where to install select "C" and perform a full format
After that its smooth sailing (or at least it should be)
Once XP is installed and running you can add the "D" drive back to the PC as a slave. Retreive your data and away you go.
Only reason I suggest you take the Drive "D" out of your PC is to insure you don't loose whatever is on it and this way you'll know which drive you're actually booting from ;)

Question.
so you want to get rid of the o/s on d: that has data that that you want to keep?
Are you sure the damn thing is just not overheated?? Afterall it is a AMD.. :p how long has it been cooling and have you tried to start it up again?
Why would you reinstall from the recovery console? I would have thought you would have to reformat first

yeah everything is backed up on D as well as I burned about 3 cd's last night of stuff just in case.
so you dont think I fried something by formatting using the recovery consol do you?
I can loose everything on D formatting the C drive?

Its possible to lose everything. One time I thought I was installing xp on to C: when it was really formatting and installing onto D: god was I pissed, 60gigs of music videos, and music GONE!. Granted that was when I was trying my unattend install diskette and that might've had something wrong with it.

yes I would like to get rid of the installation on the d drive if possible,
the only thing I did was format from the recovery consol then when that was done it restarted and I began to install as normal
the only reason I formatted from the recovery consol was I saw no option to format when I was in the windows setup....bear in mind this was about the 3'rd time I installed windows today, once which wound up on d a second time to get it on C and a 3'rd time because it never wiped out the old files on c when I did it.
I dont think its heat, it cooled down a long time before I tried it again. and it runs pretty cool anyway since I have some good cooling on it....
I am going to take it to the shop since it hasnt even been a year since they replaced the power supply and motherboard so maybe I can sneak it in under warranty...yeah right.
Just play it safe and remove "D' out of the PC for now

Brom... here's what I did to get rid of a dual install. just delete the Windows dir on D. then enable the viewing of hidden and system files. and modify the boot.ini file in notepad and remove the line where it's pointing towards the install on D:
Bromy
07-14-2003, 04:29 PM
ok cool thats a neat trick lol
yeah but the boot ini file is exactly the same so there is no way to tell if i could look but i cant lol i remember it saying everything exactly the same except the start where it says "partition 0" and the next line is "partition 1" i have no idea which is whick lol

I agree with Jim.. remove the d: to be safe. At least you'll have your backup
Once you get the c: formatted and up and running, then you can tackle the d:
Good luck!
I always look on these things as a great learning experience :D

I admit it, I am lazy. I have been meaning to clean the inside of the computer and the cooling fans, but kind of hard to do while laying down all the time in the position I am in thats my story and I am sticking to it. lol
Update on my computer, the dust was so bad my power supply got plugged up and overheated and fried.
So I am getting a new power supply, and also replacing the Volcano 7 processor fan and the video card. I should have it back later today I hope if all goes well.
Was going to get the gForce FX 5900 but the computer is not worth spending 800 bucks on a video card so I am getting a gForce FX 5600 with 256 megs of ddram on it..probably wont notice a difference from my gforce 2 except the extra ram will be nice when working with Bryce or other graphic programs, with a complex scene in Bryce things get kind of jittery, so much so I had to increase my page file size one day because the scene I was working on was locking up my computer.
gforce (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=446&MODEL=MS-8912)
special thanks to Jim and all others who helped, and listened to me rant....though some of you didnt see the real rant lol
