Now still fixing sis's computer and have it at home today... I've been trying to resolve her shutdown issues. Her system is hanging at the 'windows is shutting down' splash screen. In safe mode I can shut down, so I'm suspecting video.

I go into msconfig and disable all

process config.sys file
process autoexec.bat file
greyed out
process system.ini file
process win.ini file
load startup group items

then one at a time I check these... windows shuts down fine with all unselected. Then fine with config.sys and autoexec.bat selected (one at a time) then hangs when system.ini is selected and also hangs when win.ini is selected. I do notice that the video changes to the standard video display (screen resolution is huge). I've uninstalled the video driver and reinstalled with no change.... I've gone thru all troubleshooting processes to no avail.

I installed this card and driver for her initially and there were no problems except she said her system hangs intermittenly after playing certain games such as grand theft auto (graphic intense). I just figured that the game itself provided the odd glitch.

Will I have to do a complete format of her hard drive and reinstall everyting fresh?

p.s. video card is GeForce4 MX440 and the only updated drivers I can find at the site is detonator drivers.

I tried to hook her computer up to my cable, her nic card is still installed in her system from her cable internet days and still won't pull up any pages thru IE. I did a repair yesterday on her IE 6, I guess it did no good.

Funny thing though, I did an winipcfg in her system with my cable hooked up and this is the differences

ip # is different by one digit.... 24.114.242.** (** being different on each machine) ( not running simultaneously though of course since I only have one nic card in my system and no crossover cable)

the host name being different with her first name in place of (HOME).basp.phub.net.cable.rogers.com.

would IE be corrupted from restoring of the registry?

setup..... 'failed to load Internet Connection wixard helper component'

that's the same message I get on my system too. Guess it wasn't installed when I installed win98se on both computers.... although I just did the recommended setup on both systems.
