My sis bought herself a logitech wingman rumblepad joystick and tried to install the drivers for it.. plugged it into her usb (scanner is in other one) then computer wouldn't recognize it. I asked her if she installed the drivers and she said yes.... still wouldn't work. I asked more questions then asked if there was a disk that came with the device and she said yes, I then asked did you install the driver from that disk? No, she said.. remember she isn't that computer literate.. but is learning very fast LOL

Anyway, I'm trying to help her over the phone (my day off, I want to rest LOL ) anyway she goes through the add new hardware process then wham..... error message on reboot.... windows can't find blah blah...... it turns out that the Lmouse.vxd went missing and now her computer won't boot up and recommended reinstallation of windows...

on on on.... I go up there (bust the front axle on my car) and go to try to reinstall windows (98SE) over top hoping to fix it.... nope Lmouse.vxd is still missing from system.ini..... I look on her second hard drive ( I installed a new hard drive a while back but didn't take windows files off her original just in case.. ) so I copy the file from that windows/system/Lmouse.vxd just to see if that would help... nope now windows shuts down instead of booting.

I go in via safe mode and figure I'll have to re-format her new hard drive and start over.... but anyone have any other suggestions...???? I didn't back up her registry but maybe I can still hack it somehow.

TIA I'm working on it tomorrow at the restaurant.. during slow times of course... LOL I'll have my computer online and hers beside me also.. computer/pizza/pasta/breakfast techie/cook LOL

Once in safe mode remove the file you copied from the other drive then run sfc
You can use sfc to scan for altered or missing files (it will ask you for the win 98 disk when it needs to restore)
Or...you can specify the file in question, insert the Win98 cd and restore it.

Start > Run > sfc > ok

ok thanks Jim... she hasn't dropped off her system yet... but I'll give that a shot. What does SFC stand for? I saw it in a help site about .vxd errors but it didn't elaborate on that acronym.

I can't find that file anywhere on the win98 cd.... although I've searched and it's supposed to be within the base5.cab file. ???? I'll have to continue this tomorrow

ok I did the extract yesterday by typing the full path of the file I wanted to extract c:\windows\system\lmouse.vxd and then in the restore from I browsed to the cd drive and selected win98 and it said successfully extracted. So then I rebooted normally and the computer shuts down instead of booting.... I glimpsed a quick screen with the words lmouse but it was so quick that I couldn't catch all the words. Now what????? Do I edit config and autoexec back to it's normal state after inputting the access to the cdrom during safe mode?

thanks Jim for your help.....

nope... still getting 'error loading lmouse.vxd, please reinstall windows' then the computer shuts down. :( this is nuts....

I see older registry saves should I restore one of those?

rb004.cab 6/19/03 I did this backup today
rb003.cab 6/12/03
rb002.cab 6/11/03
rb001.cab 6/10/03
rb000.cab 6/9/03

ok I just went ahead and did a restore using the 11th... and now the system is booting normally.... now I'll just plug the joystick in and see if I can get it to behave without messing up the mouse again. :D

thanks Jim

yup and now I have to reinstall certain programs... I can dial up but IE doesn't load pages.. dns not found. And also her computer won't do a proper shutdown... hangs on 'shutting down windows'. I've gone through the cold boot process with no luck and nothing is running in the background. Her system is AMD 850 MHz, 256 MB RAM, gigabyte MB... exactly same as mine and I've never had that issue.... the only difference now is the video card she has, GEforce MX440 ?? something close to that anyway.. When her system boots I hear the post beep then another beep when the splash screen shows. Can't find beep codes for this. :( frustrating :cry

adding to this... with the shutdown issue, I boot into safe mode and shutdown/restart and no problem. I'll try to see if I can get the updated video drivers for her system, but the problem now is,, I can dialup but IE won't load pages so I'm in the process of trying a repair but didn't see Internet Explorer in her add/remove programs, only the update and a # so I removed that and will now try to connect online and see what's what.

this is starting to sound like a diary LOL
