View Full Version : windows update
since her system is here and not hooked up to Internet is there anyway I can install the updates by burning them on cd from my system then installing on hers? She is on dialup at home and it would take forever to download and install.
I don't want to take my machine apart... nic,,,,cable,,,,, and so on.

not sure on this but I believe you can
I know you could order a cd from microsoft due to the size of the downloads for dialup users.
but to be honest I am guessing here.

Well as far as doing that with the service packs (I guess that’s what you mean by the updates) I don't think that’s possible
When you click on the download button the SP looks for windows so it can update the files.
I don't see an option to download to a folder on your drive; you can only download the exe that initiates the SP download.
I have tried several times to download it so I could burn it for a friend who is on the phone lines, but I can’t seem to do it.
I thought there was a way to save the updates on your own computer to disk then instead of doing the updates all over again after doing a fresh install we could just input the disk and update... hmmmm I'll do a search and let you know what I find.

How can I get and save Windows updates to an archive?

HOW TO GET AND SAVE WINDOWS UPDATES
Some time ago, when I would go to the Windows Updates site, I would be given a choice of having the update installed now or saving the update to a file on the hard disk. I would always choose save it.
Then Microsoft changed their ways of doing things and I found I had no choice given. This irritated me, but I lived with it. I also did not like the fact that everytime I went to the update site and had it scan to see what I needed, it would tell me about all these 40 or more language updates which I did not needed but had to deselect.
* Then one day, I was at the Windows Update site and was nosing around to see what some of the other "features" might be. I saw one choice labeled Personalize Windows Update. Hey this looks like I should check this out.
Clicking Personalize Windows Update led me to a screen with a box to check to: Display the link to Windows Update Catalog under See Also. I checked it.
Also then clicked on Scan Updates which presented me with some choices so I could Choose Classes. There were certain classes I wasn't interested in, so I could check or uncheck as desired. Especially I could uncheck the box for Mulit-Language Features.
I then ran the normal scan for updates and I no longer had the large number of unwanted updates dealing with languages.
Now I tried looking at the See Also section way down at the bottom left of the screen, and selected Select Windows Update Catalog.
This presented me with the opportunity to select which operating system I was interested in. I chose Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition, but I could have chosen any one of many others.
Seeing a link labeled Advanced Search Options, I just had to click it and dig further. It asked me to specify the Date the update was posted to the web. I chose Select All Posted Dates.
Now I could select the Update Types. Of course I checked them all! Went to the download basket where it allowed me to Type of Browse to Location of Choice. It allowed me to specify where to put the files. Now all I had to do was click Download and files started to be retrieved from Microsoft and into my very own archive, safe and sound and protected against Microsoft's choice to discontinue support of a system they would rather I were no longer using.

Some people want to download the Windows Updates to archive them instead of automatically install them. From the Windows Update site, here's how you can do this.
You need to use the V4 Windows Update site for this at...
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Then put a checkmark on "Display the link to the Windows Update catalog" and click the "Save Settings" button.
Now, back on the left side (under the "See Also" section), you'll see an item called "Windows Update Catalog". Click on it.
Then click on "Find updates for Microsoft Operating Systems". Select the operating system.
From there, you can add any patch you want to download to a download basket. That download basket will transfer the patches to your machine in a directory you specify, but it won't install them. You'll be able to archive them for future use.
ok thanks bromy that one is easier to understand than mine LOL
i'm downloading a sh$%^t load of stuff now... 20 MB to be exact..
I guess I have to look for IE 6 though before I can install the fixes.
