At first it was intermittent, but now everytime I start the computer with WIN ME on it...it freezes at the windows logo screen.

I have to do a restart and then I get the choices>> Normal, safe etc., I choose normal, because I don't know what I would look for in Safe mode <shrugs>...and it starts up ok and no troubles after that.

I've run all the checks via Norton's (disk doctor, win doctor etc.,) no errors reported.

Any ideas as to what can be causing it??

Have you installed anything lately? Done any Windows updates? Driver updates?

Cleaned up everything lately? defrag, scandisk, disk cleanup, adaware?

It's been going on for weeks now. I have a hard time remembering what was taking place at THAT time. When it started I blamed it on my son using online gaming (network play), because I only noticed it after he had used it for that. He would play at night, then I'd be the one turning it on in the morning. Eventually, I told him about the problem after he plays the game...and he told me it happens to him as well. I didn't know because he had never said anything, and as I said, it was intermittent.

I do regular Windows updates...on automatic.

I have done scandisk and defrag (via Norton's) lately. I recently installed Norton's 2003...after the problem started. I run Adaware and found a whole bunch of junk and got rid of that. Haven't checked it in a few weeks now though.

I do notice I'm getting more pop-up windows than I'm used to.

I was using a trial pop-up killer, but would like to get another one that's free.

Haven't installed any new drivers.

I'd like to get a registry cleaner....any recommendations??

I just came home now and the computer started up no problem, didn't have to restart.

Strangely though, Norton's didn't load this time. That's no good. I checked MSCONFIG and Norton's is selected in the start up tab..so, ????

What else do you need to know??

If you are using WinMe see if you have a restore point that what was before you believe the problem started. I never run adware not a big believer in it, but then again I know everything that is installed on here. I would also install Norton's prior to using the restore point. Then reinstall it afterward.

I use Adaware because Kazaa is on here and it attracts the crapola.

 Do you mean uninstall Norton's before restore??

Any programs I installed (after restore point) will be gone though, right?? I'll have to see what I have done in the past month or so. I may have a few trial/demos that are still active. Would I be able to download these again??

Nortons is different, I always recommend to uninstall before using the restore point, just something I do, I have seen nortons cause a few problems when the restore is used and it is installed, very rarely mind you but it has happened, but you can choose to ignore me LOL .... your call :D ...

I'm not choosing to ignore you..lol...I am clarifying, because I feel you made a typo...:p I'll do what you suggest, because that way if things go wrong I can blame it on you...lolol

It's not hard to uninstall, it just seems to take pieces of windows with it lol.
You uninstall, then go hunting for the files that didn't get removed and by the time your done...BSOD! :D

It is not that complicated, you will be reinstalling it after you do the restore point. So anything is does take, although I have never seen a problem, will be be in place after you do the restore point, it is not rocket science. I have done it many, many times on all sorts of systems on all Versions of windows and have yet to run into a problem. You are doing a restore point, and reinstalling, it should not be an issue.

i have never had a problem with uninstalling norten then reinstalling either.

Only problem I ever had was when I used Mcaffe when I was stupid and then installed Nortens without removing Mcaffee 1'st, they didnt like each other lol

i've never had a problem uninstalling norton either

& in fact.. if you want to 'upgrade' from one WinOS to XP.. you have to uninstall norton first or norton won't work once you install the XP

Update for you...in regards to Windows freezing on start up (sometimes)...:(

I think/know the problem was with some of the junk hanging out with Kazaa.

Soooo...I put Kazaa on a diet..lol...http://www.dietk.com/

When I installed this program, it found and removed any unnecessary files/spyware etc., attached to Kazaa. It just did it automatically, without user intervention (the way adaware does).

The only freeze I've had since, was once after my son had run Kazaa directly instead of using Diet K. And, he won't be doing that again... :p :D

So far, so good...
