on the lap top... suddenly the log in welcome screen comes on, when you start the computer. i didn't turn this one (kids, maybe?) newho.. i went into user accounts.. then into 'change the way users log on or off" & UNclicked "use welcome screen"
so now that's off. it's still uncheck.
when you turn on the lap top it still comes up wanting the admin (main account) to log on
how do i turn this off? tyvm

you must have installed the .NET runtime from Microsoft
If so.. this will apply to you:
Why Windows XP suddenly asks for a username and password after installing .NET is because when you install .NET a new account gets added to the system. Now you have to login so windows knows witch user it is that is starting the machine.
To remove the login and still be able to run .NET programs this is what to do on your machine.
1. Go to the control panel, and click on user accounts.
2. Click on the account that says ASP and choose to delete it.
3. When asked choose that you want to keep the user files and also delete the account.
Then "ok".
Your Windows XP should now not bother you with the login screen if installing .NET screwed it up. One final note is that the functionality in .NET that needs the ASP useraccount will probably fail after removing this. But most desktop programs will not use ASP since ASP (Active Server Pages) is software for webservers running webapplications.

If that doesn't apply to your situation ...
Select Run from the Start Menu, type control userpasswords2, and click Ok.
Turn off the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok.

isn't that funny. i was just on my way to add/remove programs to see if a WinUpdated added that NET. it seems to be so i'm uninstalling it. will let you know if it works. cuz otherwise...
there is no ASP account so i can't delete it so... no fix trying that.
it's actually not coming up as a fancy welcome screen anymore. it's just a log on box

me too. I took my system in for something and came home and they took it upon themselves to update my computer and installed that .NET crap on... I was so pissed and will never take my computer back to them. Anyways,,, I had nothing but trouble after that when I uninstalled that. Hope that doesn't happen to you. BTW.... it wasn't on the system I have now... just my old one which I did format and started over on.

I had to remove the admin password. The log in box still pops up so now they don't have to type in a password BUT it doesn't not retain the user name of Administrator so they need to keep typing that in & then hit OK
Kids can't spell Admin too well .. any idea how to get it to retain that info?
Or better yet.. how to get rid of this farkin log in box? lol
didn't you go through that here (http://www.graphicsteck.ca/vb/showthread.php?t=5745&highlight=screen)
I want to know how to do that in Vista,,, so hubby can bypass his log on screen and just go to desktop
btw.... no more shutdown problems since I uninstalled AVG and Zone Alarm.. they were both supposed to be vista compatible but I guess not.

have you tried this?
go to start button, in the run box type
control userpasswords2
press enter
deselect the "users must enter password to log in"
in the window that appears type the username and pass of the user you want to autologin
if the user has no password leave those feilds blank

unfortunately the info off the other thread (deb posted) is not working
maybe cuz i have an AltDefaultUserName & not just a DefaultUserName :whome:
i still get the log in box & you still have to type Administrator into it
don't need the p/w but do need to put in Administrator

i think it has to do with these settings
http://www.msfn.org/board/Auto-Log-Domain-t50555.html
& i'm not sure which one is not what it should be except for the "DefaultDomainName" i have NO idea what they mean. do i put Cogeco there?

nope,,, didn't work, still got the acer log in page :(
hnmmm just wondering, there are three accounts set up on his system, first is Acer (admin), second is his(admin) and third is guest. Perhaps I should delete the other two and just leave Bryan's?
Also, when I uncheck the box I cannot click on any of the other user name accounts, I have to recheck the box then select the username and then uncheck the box again and all the others get greyed out again.
okok.... just rebooted and all is ok... went right to the desktop... this was unchecking the box on his name only and the other ones not.

 try rebooting?
TownBear
04-05-2008, 06:06 AM
like doi. i did reboot lol
upon reboot every fix i tried, worked. it was subsequent starts up where, what i'd tried, stopped working
i had to use this tweak
TweakUI :- http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c...wertoySetup.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe)
Install it then run it, click the + sign next to 'Logon', click 'Autologon', tick the box, enter username (default of 'Administrator' should be ok if you haven't made another account) and click on 'Set Password' button if you still want a password, Apply, Ok.
Re-boot to test, it should go straight to the Desktop.
so far, so good. BUT, i'm still only on the first reboot so i may fail yet lol
edit: two shutdowns & two reboots & still holding strong :D
pretty sure it was caused by that MS.net. no idea how or why kids would have gotten that but .. whatever.
