or at least that's the plan...lol

I got my hands on a 15GB Maxtor, so I'm putting it in my "graphics" computer so Bryce and his buddies will have a place all their own. Wish me luck..lol :D

Its easy to do nav you should have no probs.

Just change the pins on the back of the second hard drive to slave instead of master.

I think I am the one picking my nose, not you JMD...

BTW when I bought my new computer the day of the WTC attack I got two 60 gig hard drives, one soley for Bryce so I can keep all my projects and objects.

A simple BR5 file can be huge, look at this one for example. and its only halfway done. I may not even get to finish it.The other day while I was working on it a yellow exclamtion mark came up in the taskbar and said 'you are running low on virtual memory, windows is adjusting the size of your virtual memory" The computer slowed right down and cpu usage was at 100% doing nothing but having the scene open.I think I have reached the end of that scene, will find out later...

Thats with an XP2100 and 512 megs of ddram

I have never seen that error come before, and saving the scene as a BR5 took 20 minutes too.

You were skim reading again...lol

He said"How come I am the fat guy?"
I said"because I don't know if you pick youe nose"...lolol

Anyway...  You have 60GB for Bryce...lucky Bryce...:p

So, about the error...are you running out of space?? Is that what you're saying?? Virtual memory, unless set to a specific number, will use a percentage of the available space. So, it sounds like you sre running out of space... ...on a 60GB...lololol

I'll watch that Bryce and save to CD if I start filling up fast. The older creations can be stored away anyways.

Not running out of space, maybe its what I have the size set too

Yikes...I'm not out of the woods yet....just looking at sytem properties. See....only one hard drive shows.

Navigator

Yet, I can access it and all seems to be fine.

When I look at the performance tab I get this:

Navigator

I'm thinking it wants a driver. It must be a volkswagon...lolol

Joseph
12-06-2002, 12:58 PM
LOL

It dosen't need a driver

I think you have to go into your bios and tell it you have a second drive(slave drive)

Navigator
12-06-2002, 01:22 PM
The computer/bios recognizes the second drive as the slave. The problem lies somewhere with the IDE controllers, which I don't fully understand...

When the computer is booting up and going through the list of what is there, it lists it properly.

Actually, if I had never looked at Device manager, I wouldn't have known anything was wrong, because it behaves well....accessing etc. I have folders set up on the D drive and everything.

The error message explains that "windows was unable to identify a real-mode driver or memory resident program loaded into your config.sys or autoexec.bat files. Because windows could not identify the driver or program it has switched to compatibility mode to ensure the program will run. However this decreases overall performance. To improve performance, remove the program or driver causing the problem, or contact manufacturer for an upgraded version"

I'm going to check those two files now and see what they read.

I was also considering switching the second hard drive to be a slave to the CD ROM, thereby moving it to a new controller with maybe less demands on it. Any thoughts on that??

Also checking at TCM...lol...might be good for something...lol

Beyond that, I may have to get my A+ book out...lol

Thanks, I'll have to review....the third link didn't work.

I will also go to MS and see what's there.

Damn. I wish I hadn't looked...lmao :cry

Joseph

The first link looks the best

Just do a search on google

Whatever your OS is

say Install second hard drive with win 98 or win 2000. What ever your using as an operating system and you should find something.

It should only take 10 mins to install one and that includes installation.

Its been so long since I installed one I can’t remember

Bromy
12-06-2002, 01:54 PM
wish I could help but I never installed a hard drive

Navigator
12-06-2002, 01:56 PM
The first one was the best and yes...the install went like he said. I didn't leave any screwdrivers inside the box either...I just picked it up and shook it real hard to make sure..lmao

In the end though that link didn't help because it doesn't discuss anything going wrong.

I'm going to post the problem at TCM and maybe at Asend if I don't get it figured out.

Check the cables make sure they're all in tight. Also is the 2nd harddrive on the same IDE Channel as harddrive(same ribbon) or is it on it's own serparate channel?? Could also tell it to do a cable select and taket the jumper off of the harddrive and see what happens.

Cables are OK

same channel...yes

I could do the cable select change...will try that (not knowing why..lol)

Did you see my post at Asend???

I got more info on the matter from MicroSoft, but it didn't fix the prob. Basically it says, because of "serialization" between the two channels, it is impossible to access the hard disk in protected mode and the other in real mode. Then it suggested what Joe said and that didn't work.

I need the VIA chipset 4 in 1 drivers, tried getting them via download last night, but the darn thing wouldn't go to finish (hung part way). I have a guy from TCM saying he'll send them via e-mail, but nothing yet.

I'll try loading the drivers before I do anything else since this would be the easiest solution.

Going to check Asend now. Thanks tRip...stay tuned...:D

Via drivers don't do anything. I've never had to install them for hardrive screwups. and No I didn't see ur post @ asend or @ TCM cuz I really don't feel like logging into TCM LOL

Navigator
12-07-2002, 10:58 AM
Well, tRiP...I installed the drivers and didn't do one damn bit of good..lol

I'll try your suggestion on switching to cable select....but, since I've never used that option...what is the point of it?? Will my 2nd HD still behave like a slave??? I've always wanted a slave...too bad, this one isn't behaving. Will get the whips out anytime...lol

I appreciate any help you can give on this...:bow :bow

Please read my post at Joe's so I don't have to repeat myself...

MiNd_tRiP
12-07-2002, 11:01 AM
What it does is since there's no jumper on the drive, it goes by what location its in on the cable and sets itself accordingly. If that doesn't work, look on the first drive for a jumper selection called "Master with secondary drive on cable" set it to that and then set the second drive to slave.

goodlcuk:)

and told ya those VIA drivers sukt :D
