How do I know if the power supplies are compatible?
do they have to be from 'identicle systems'?

Power Supplies only have to be compatible with Dell and Compaq systems and sometimes Hewlett Packard systems, everything else is pretty well compatible. Except if you are trying to put an AT into an ATX case lol :)
check the motherboard and processor stats.... my processor states what power supply is recommended.... mine is supposed to be bottom and back vented however the techie who replaced mine put in an back and front vented which is compatible more for Pentium 4 not AMD's... but luckily my temps haven't reflected any problems (running AMD here) . The reason for bottom vent is because the PS it sits over top of the processor and will help for cooling. Also, check the form factor for your box. :D

as long as the powersupply is atx compliant (pretty much all are nowadays) and has enough power to supply to your components. Also if you have a pentium 4, the powersupply needs to have the extra little adapter that plugs into the motherboard.
