My computer kept bugging me to install sp2 so i did :cry I can see the msn messenger icon, yahoo messenger icon, norton, sound, on my taskbar, but if I open two or three links, and want to switch between one and the other, I don't see them anymore on my taskbar. Instead I have a little green box (task manager) and must double click on that since it shows the programs that are running, click on the one I want to go back to.....and so on and so forth. When I get a messenger message and I minimise it to do something else, I lose it, unless I open the taskbar manager and switch back to it from there! msn haven't responded yet. Can anyone help or does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Thanks

I have a response from microsoft, and advice as to what to do. If ayone has the same problem please let me know and I will forward the email. I have my doubts that it will work and I already uninstalled the updates but I will install later and follow their advice. From what I have read so far on various geek websites, one out of ten has this problem and there isn't a fix.

Yes, please post it for anyone else who has a similar problem. Seems no one knows how to fix it.

Dear Rona,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support Service. My name is William, and I'm glad to work with you. For your reference, the case ID for this service request is SRZ050110001815.

From your e-mail I understand that you cannot see the icons of the running programs when minimizing them. If I have misunderstood please let me know.

Based on this situation I suggest you perform the following steps:

Step 1. Perform a whole system anti-virus scan.

Step 2. Try Ad-ware.
a. Download and install Ad-Aware from the following page:
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/

b. Click Start -> All Programs -> "Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Personal" -> "Ad-Aware SE Personal" to start Ad-Aware.

(Note: If there is a popup box asking whether or not to check for definition updates, please click OK and click Connect. Click OK to download and install the latest definition, and then click Finish.)

c. Click the Start button in the Ad-Aware window, and then click Next to start the scan.

d. After the scan is finished, click Next, click the check boxes on the "Critical Objects" tab to select them, click Next, and the click OK to confirm the removal.

This will remove all found spyware objects. Restart your computer.

For more information about spyware, please refer to the following website:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/articles/spyware.asp

Step 3. If the issue persists after step 1 and 2 please enter into Safe Mode to test the issue.
Restart your computer.
When the computer completes the "Power on Self-Test" (usually this appears as a black screen with scrolling text commands), hold down the F8 key until you see the Windows Startup menu.
On the Windows Startup menu, select Safe Mode (use the arrow pad on your keyboard), and then press ENTER.

The screen resolution is poor in Windows Safe Mode and there will be labels at the corners of the screen indicating the system is in Safe Mode.

Please provide me with results at your earliest convenience.

If anything is unclear please let me know.

Best Regards,

William Wang

PS I ran the scans and then installed sp2 again. Everything worked fine, until windows update asked me install some critical updates. Right after I did that I crashed. Restored to just before the installation of critical updates. All worked well for one hour and then i crashed again. Uninstalled sp2, restored to saturday and now Im doing great.....but wow what a mess:( In any case I hope the msn instructions might be able to be of use to some of the members here.:)

Thanks Joe.......nice place you have here.

This doesn't sound like a problem, to be honest. It sounds more like Windows is hiding your inactive icons.(correct me if I'm wrong on this) Right click your start button select properties from the pop-up menu. Click the taskbar tab at the top of the box that pops up, and uncheck hide inactive icons, and hit apply. They should then stay on the taskbar without having to click anything else. Hope this helps.

Thanks roadracer but that wasn't the problem. The icons of programmes running and minimised wouldn't show on the taskbar. I open outlook express...no icon, open yahoo, none either, so basically it was a problem to switch from one to the other, unless i clicked tab and space bar , or the little green footprint that appeared on my taskbar which had all the running programmes.. then i had to highlight the page or programme i wanted and click switch to get it. if i was on messenger and minimised the message to check something, I lost it...it's a serious problem, and I don't think many have managed to fix it....so bye to msn updates.:) thanks

Download the registry repair for that particular problem here. I mis-read your original post, but this sounds more like what you and others are going through. I found it here
